Serial Number

Another Ithaca 37 serial number needed I work at a major sporting goods store's firearm department and noticed a Ithaca model 37 featherweight. It's a 12 gauge with a 28 inch barrel.

I have an older Ithaca Model 37 given to me by my dad. He had it when I was in my younger years so I would have to assume it to be around 40 years old.
I have only the one barrel for it which is marked FULL. I presume this to indicate the choke of the barrel. On the barrel is the number 284596 that would probably be some sort of part number.
There are no markings to indicate the serial number visible on the receiver. The only markings are a water scene with ducks or geese etched on the left hand side and the same with pheasants on the right.
Doe anyone have any idea of the value of this gun? I presume the lack of serial number may be a problem in the present day Peoples Republik of Kalifornia.
Any info or helpful suggestions appreciated.

dutchman88,
First, Welcome to SGW..................
Second, congrats on having your Dad's shotgun.
Before 1968 there was no law that said a firearm had to have a serial number. Some manufacturers put them on and some did not.
My Gun Trader's Guide list 18 different versions of the Ithaca Model 37.
Prices run from a low of $171 to a high of $717..........not counting the ones listed as Thousand Dollar Grade (they run in the six thousand range).
'Assuming' you have a Standard Grade with plain stock the value runs $171 to $287. However, that is just a number in a book. Value depends on what someone is willing to pay.
Take a look at gunbroker.com to see what others are 'asking'.
Again, welcome.

Hi dutchman88,
Again, welcome aboard. The serial number on older model 37s will be in 2 places: 1. on the barrel, usually on the right hand side of the gun near the magazine tube. 2. on the right hand side of the receiver where the barrel and magazine tube meet.
Also,these numbers should match.

Ithaca 37 Serial Numbers Chart

I cannot find the serial number on the receiver anyplace. The writing on the barrel is as follows Ithaca Gun Co. 1849992-model-37 FEATHERLIGHT R (in circle) 20 ga- 2 3/4 chamber - MADE IN USA Underneath that is the word TESTED and MOD No other numbers that I can see anywhere on the gun. I am not a expert but I beleave if your Model 37 has a serial number below 855,000 or 1963 the barrels are fixed and non-interchangeable. Above 855,000 serial number or 1963 they do have interchangeable barrels but they can require some fitting by a gunsmith. I think some of the Deerslayers models do not have interchangeable barrels. Knowing that Ithaca made X number of model37's in a given year is very helpful. But if I'm looking at an older Ithaca model 37, how would I find out if it's in original configuration (as shipped from the factory). All these Model 37's had the serial number prefix of 381. Any of these that came to the factory for service were converted back to the original shell stops at no charge. NOTE: Ithaca introduced interchangeable barrels commencing with serial number 850,000.
