Been wanting to make this post for a long to really get this out there about what was said so here goes.

Bit of back story to all of this. My name's RadicalzEnigma, some of you in the community know me as Hayden Robins, Co-Founder and Brand Manager of Team Millennium. We're responsible for the on-going fandub of Season 0 (currently at 8 episodes since 2015) and we originally started from a reddit post here on /r/yugioh when we tried to fandub GX Season 4 in to English.

So the time is February 2015, I'd posted on here about an interest in fandubbing GX's 4th season and got a bunch of people together that weren't even Voice Actors, an editor and a epic musicman in /u/masteryoyo28. We started to fandub Episode 156 and were doing so and gaining a rather small fanbase, but around 6-7 weeks in to the project our email we were using at the time was hit with a message from 4K Media from Digital Producer, Chris Beaumont. He subjected the email 'Game..off?' something to this day that still gets to me on a personal level as there was no need to add insult to injury. But nevertheless, here is the email in full along with our responses. The email is rather.. interesting.

Hello Team Millennium,

Thank you for your courteous reply and for ceasing activity.

Please see the below responses to your questions (though please keep in mind I am not a lawyer).

How did you go about finding us?

We have a lot of free time and like to Google ourselves, haha. Seriously though, we like to follow what’s going on in the community. We read all the messages people send us, comments on Facebook, replies on Twitter and even browse message boards, reddit etc. I have no particular details in this case however, as I was at least the third person in the e-mail chain after it was discovered.

Our project's goal is only to dub the fourth season of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX which has remained undubbed all these years. We have no intentions of dubbing seasons 1-3 as those are already licensed and dubbed. We have no intentions on dubbing anything currently done and only want to dub this for the community as a whole. We feel that GX needs to be completed for all of the fans in the United States and Europe and any other English speaking countries whose fans may feel left out. We don’t want to make any money out of this. Again, no intention to do that.

Season 4 is also licensed by 4K Media. When Yu-Gi-Oh! GX originally aired another company held the rights, and for whatever reason they did not opt to localize those episodes. 4K Media is not that other company. That is not to say we’ll be releasing Season 4 anytime soon, but we do have agreements with the creators and rights owners that were paid for, and the option to dub it is on the table.

There is a ton of great anime that have not been licensed for distribution outside of Japan or had a dub made, perhaps you could go about licensing one of those and then dubbing and distributing that? That way no one like me is going to send you an e-mail (in fact you might be the one writing sending it) and you may be able to pay yourself and the fine people on the project for their work.

Have we violated any fair use laws by attempting to create an English version of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Season 4?

Fair use applies to works including commentary, criticism, parody, news reporting, research, teaching, library archiving, and scholarship. This project doesn’t seem to fit into any of those categories.

If we continue with this, making no profit from it, does Konami or 4KMedia lose any money from us dubbing Season 4 in English?

Potentially yes. (I mean technically they already have since they are paying me to write this e-mail).

Is there any way we could continue the project without negatively affecting your business or underlying ownership?

If there is I am unaware of it.

If at all possible we would be interested in creating the Season 4 Dub for 4K Media.

Thank you for the offer but if we were to pursue a dub of season 4 I believe we would employ our own production crew and original voice talent.

At the very least we have enclosed a short excerpt of our work to send to you, and only you to at least show you what we have done so far. We mean no harm.

I personally think it’s awesome you put this together, that you found so many people interested in participating and you actually have something to show. The hardest thing about doing something is actually doing it, and so many people just don’t take those steps. As I mentioned in my original e-mail, fans are so awesome and fandom can bloom in so many cool and surprising ways. In this case however, despite the effort and love, it’s just a move.

Again, there is a ton of great anime that has not been licensed or dubbed… but you seem to be able to get people going on a project, perhaps you could get a few more people on board and create your own original animated show.

As for the sample you sent - I understand it’s probably not 100% done but if you want some constructive criticism you may want to adjust or normalize the audio so it’s a bit more equal (it was hard to understand some characters – I assume everyone is recording at home and sending you files you stitch together), add some music and sound effects and try to match the flap a bit more (I believe we do change the flap from time to time to better match the dialogue in our dubs).

In addition to further the idea that we would not be hurting the brand or causing any negative effects we’d like to point to the star trek fan films that were created and did not cause any negative effects on the reboot, and only strengthened the solidarity between fans. We hope to accomplish something similar. We only wish to express our admiration for this amazing property and hope to promote its success.

There are so many good fan films out there! Star Trek, Star Wars, Ghostbusters… there are even live action Yu-Gi-Oh! fan films. The difference there is that while they do borrow elements from the intellectual properties they are inspired by they are generally creating something new, not simply presenting the original material verbatim in another language.
