I have one of the original 3' Bulldogs, and am pleased to see that the new management is going to offer it in that configuration again.
If you are actually going to hunt with this gun, though, get the 4' target model. You won't regret the extra 40-50 fps velocity from the longer barrel, and the adjustable sights are valuable in a light gun that will be shot beyond 25 yards. That is because, in a light gun, the bullet weight makes a more significant difference to vertical point of impact than in a heavier one. Figure that big, slow bullet will do fine to about 50 yards. By 100 yards you will have serious hold-over with it—a foot or so—, so don't expect to hunt at long range with it without some pretty specialized practice.
The .44 Special is a remarkably accurate cartridge in a good gun. I hear the new management is doing a better job that the CharCo company that came inbetween and which produced scatter guns, unintentionally, so I would certainly take the chance on it. The original company made the first Bulldog in two flavors: Accurate and inaccurate. If you got a good one it was great. If you got a bad one, the gun would group about 8'-12' low and left at 25 feet. My dad bought one of the former and loved it so much he bought one for me for a birthday present. Unfortunately, mine turned out to be one of the latter variety. Moreover, it had been kind of sloppily made, with little things like the hammer spur serrations being crooked, or the cylinder latch checkering being kind of off center.
So, I sent mine to Charter, complaining about the accuracy. They kept it for about three months. One day, the UPS truck arrived (this was long before all the air-shipping requirements were created, not because of gun owners or makers, but because of UPS employees with sticky fingers) with it. A note in the box said the frame had been twisted. Apparently the factory can destroy a deffective frame and re-issue the serial number on a good one. On the returned gun, I noticed none of the other funky parts came back, either. It seemed to me they factory had simply picked out a good looking and shooting copy and put my serial number on it, but I don't know how they actually proceeded. However they did it, I must have got a fellow who cared, because that little guy shoots better than I ever expected of it.
Below is a 25 yard offhand group fired with that 'repaired' gun (this was back when I was still shooting conventional pistol matches pretty regularly and my offhand hold was pretty fair). I used the center of the target (Navy hold) as the aim point, and you can see there is a windage correction I had to file into the frame notch later, but I left the front sight alone. I'd figured to shorten it a little later on for a 6:00 hold at 25 yards with 240 grain bullets (that's what went into the target; just a very light Bullseye load with 240 grain Hornady swaged SWC's) figuring 200 grain bullets would then impact at point of aim, but I never bothered.
In the name of full disclosure, I doctored this picture a little to remove some masking tape covering unrelated holes (I think from a .45 I was using on the same target), but those remaining are what the Bulldog did. The paper tearing is because the load was so light the bullets were probably only going about 600 fps.
